Olly Murs talks about knock-backs and how Tom Jones taught him to never give up

Olly Murs has spoken about dealing with knock-backs before getting his big break on the X Factor and said he thinks these struggles ‘make you a better person’.

The singer, 35, revealed that before getting onto the talent show he failed twice and wasn’t given any feedback on how to improve.

However speaking to Mailonline ahead of The Voice returning to ITV, Olly said dealing with those situations make people ‘appreciate what you've got and to fight for what you want.'

Olly also discussed how working with Tom Jones, 79, has taught him to ‘never give up’ and that the star’s passion for music has inspired him to keep working.

The Dear Darlin’ hitmaker said: ‘I failed twice before X Factor. I auditioned for the show three times. The first two I didn't get a look-in, they didn't look at me twice.

'They looked at me once and went “nah mate, not this year.” I didn't have any constructive criticism.

'What we try and do, and I love this about this show [The Voice], is that we actually talk after each performance and say something.

'I wasn't what they were looking for and that hurt. That really, really hurt me. And I don't think I'd be the person I am if I didn't have those knock backs.

'We all have them in life, it doesn't matter if it's singing or if another job. I think it makes you a better person. You're not learning if everything is given to you on a plate.

'You've gotta have those knock backs to make you appreciate what you've got and to fight for what you want.'

Olly also spoke about how working with Tom Jones has taught him to stick with his passions and not give up on music.

He said: ‘There was a time where – not that I was gonna give up, but – I thought 'I'll take a break, I'll have a rest, and then I thought: Why the f**k would I wanna do that?

'You've got a guy standing next to you who's having the career that he's having, why do I need to take a break? If I love music as much as I do and have the passion that he gives me every day.

‘I think passion for life, passion for music – I think that for me is so inspirational. That's what I learned from Tom, just to never give up on music.

'You know: “Oh I might go and do acting, I might go and do this – no! I love music”.'

And although passion is important, Olly also said that it is key for contestants to put in the hard work if they want to remain successful after the show.

He said: ‘I came off the X Factor and it wasn't a given I was going to be successful, it wasn't like “oh Olly's gonna be a big star” I had to work, I had to graft, I had to write that hit record, and I believe that The Voice is starting to get there now.

'It's not like “this is the next big thing”, we're just giving them a platform to shine.’

Tom Jones has been a coach on The Voice since 2012 and had a key role to play in getting Olly onto the judging panel as producers asked his opinion on the singer.

Olly is one of the X Factor’s most successful exports, going on to sell 17million records, with four number one singles and just as many albums.

In September it was reported that he was dating banker and bodybuilder Amelia Tank, 27.

It came after Olly admitted in March that he never wants to date a celebrity again, following rumours about his relationships with Melanie Sykes and Caroline Flack.

According to the Sun, Amelia combines her bodybuilding – under the name Tank The Bank – with a career in finance.

It was reported that Amelia’s stunning social media snaps caught Olly’s eye, and after sending each other’s messages they met up for a date.

A source told the publication: ‘Olly thought Amelia was gorgeous, and she was very impressed by him too.

‘They wanted to keep things quiet at first but three months down the line they are more relaxed about people knowing they are together.

‘They went for a low-key date at a pub recently and were spotted getting quite cosy there.’
